New website and logo – Cathkin Caterers

Zaeem and Saajida Rawoot commissioned us to rebuild their website and freshen up their existing logo. This was quite challenging and a fun project. All the delicious food just made us hungry all the time. The creative direction was too build an identity that was classy, timeless and professional. Our first task was too “freshen” up the existing logo.

The logo was quite a challenge as the brief was not too go off far from the original logo. Thus we had to keep the greens and blacks as well as the spoon, knife and fork.

Their old website was built in flash. Yes in flash. After careful planning and strategizing along with Zaeem and Saajidah we officially came up with the site map, which gave us an indication of how many pages we need.

We then moved onto the wireframes. We went for a clean and practicle layout so that the end user can easily navigate through the website. Their are four call to actions on the home page and 1 in the right column of the other pages.

We then moved onto the design after the wireframes was signed off by Zaeem and Saajidah. We kept the design consistent with the new logo so that their is an emphasis on brand continuity.

After the design was signed off we then moved onto the coding of the site. We used some of the new CSS3 features like box shadows, drop shadows on text and gradient on the drop down navigation blocks.

Web Design Trends for 2012

Web design is a creative process and just like any other creative subjects it has trends that define it for a certain period of time.

Whether it is about colors, coding, shapes, interactivity – trends are the ones that relate to a certain period of time in web design and most designers take them into consideration in order to be up to date with everything.

Trends are also defined by usability, so in my opinion they should not be ignored when designing a web page. Here is a round up for just some of the web design trends for the year of 2012. There are still more to come soon!

01. Responsive design

We have already gone through this subject in our previous posts, but this is a really popular trend for the upcoming “creative” season in the designer community, as well as for website developers. Many websites started to be coded responsively starting with 2010 due to the increasing number of gadgets that range from smartphones with smaller screens to tablets, to desktop computers. Designing a solution for each screen size is way too costly and in the end not effective, especially if there are so many tools and techniques that will help you create a cool responsive website.

An important thing to consider when designing responsively is how content is visually set on the website. Fonts and typography have to be wisely chosen, so that they would look good and readable, no matter the screen size.

Grids will have a bigger influence on responsive web design in 2012, and they have started gaining in popularity and use. Designers started using them more frequently and trusting them more, even if they have been on the web for a long time now.

02. Interactive and Intuitive Design

What you can see in Flash today on most of the websites is not what was in the past. This is not the annoying Flash interface you could get some years ago; hence it looks more professional and has its own place in design. It is true that many designers might prefer HMTL5 or jQuery for different features they would like to implement when designing their websites, but still Flash is pretty strong due to the interactivity it offers.

The term interactive typography will also make its place more and more in the designer communities this year. Creative typography has always been a trend, but if you would like to create an interactive design, use cool typography and engage the user to know more about your website. The use of modal windows is also acquiring force in website design and this adds a lot to the interactivity of a website.

Presenting important information as simple as possible, with the right use of typography and overall design will make your website intuitive and user friendly and this is yet another important trend for the year 2012.

03. Oversized Logos/ Headers

Even though this is not a trend specifically set for 2012, it is still on and lots of designers start using oversized logos or headers in order to promote their websites or companies. However it’s not only about promoting, once the design is successful it could be quite an eye-catch and might get the attention of the website visitors.

Oversized logos can add up an unique touch to a website and if thought through well, a well-designed oversized logo or header will benefit the overall aspect of the website, hence you can choose on how to better display information for the user. Some users are sometimes more comfortable with scrolling than with clicking. Keep this in mind when choosing the design for a website.

04. Minimalism

Focusing on user experience; hence following the principle: “keep it simple” is a must for the next web design season. This might not be considered as a new trend, but it is taking force in the latest web design samples I have spotted on the web. Information is clearly presented, focusing on the most important pieces, them being presented first and going through to the least important information.

Users are comfortable searching for the content they need when it is simple and user friendly, this is why a lot of designers tend to keep their design minimal, without overcrowding it with different elements that are not quite needed. Minimalism in shapes, features and taxonomies is a real trend lately, the number of websites overcrowded with information and graphics becoming smaller day by day.

05. Infographics

There is no other better way to present information than putting it in a chart or graph. Visualizing things is much easier than reading about them. You would always look for visuals rather than reading tons of text that in the end might be totally confusing. Putting all the information in a nicely done chart will be strongly appreciated by the end user and he will definitely be willing to share good pieces of information with other people.

Compiling one of these infographics definitely takes up from your precious time, and you might spend a lot on photoshop’ing and getting the right result, but in the end you are doing it for the user.

Don’t hesitate to use infographics in your design, if you have some information to present. This step will be greatly appreciated by the people interested in the content of your website.

06. The 3D effect

Applying depth of perception to your design is something rather new to the web design community but it is a trend that has gained weight lately. Playing with colors, gradients and other tricks will make your design interactive and will engage the user to get to see and appreciate it.

Creating dimensions in your design will make it look different than all the other websites out there and will create an interesting effect. Once you play with depths of field correctly, you will get that 3D effect that looks so fresh and new on website design.

07. HTML5 & CSS3

HTML5 and CSS3 team up in bringing fruitful designs, offering new features available for web developers.

Designers envision a bright future for these two, especially if you follow the latest standards out there. There are lots of HTML5/CSS3 project codes online that you can read and find out more about that, rather than reinventing the wheel. This collaboration will definitely offer you more possibilities and let you find the perfect solution for a website design.

Zedduo – web design and development process

This post was put together for future, past and current clients. Too many times we are asked how and what process do we follow on our web development projects. This post will also show the different phases we go through in developing a completed website as per the brief. It will give future clients a better idea on what they spending their money on.

PHASE 1: SITEMAP

The site map is where it all begins. Here we will plan and strategize with the client on the amount of pages the website will have, the sub-pages and the amount of click throughs to get to a certain page.

PHASE 2: WIREFRAME

After sign off on the site map we then proceed to the wireframe phase. A wireframe is the schematic or screen blueprint of a website. In this phase we layout and arrange the different elements on the web page. Elements like the header, body, footer, call to actions, logo, social media elements, etc. This will indicate which elements of the web page takes up the best retail space and where we place the call to actions. We start off our wireframes with rough sketches as seen below.

We then layout the elements using Adobe Illustrator CS5. The two images below is what we will present to our clients for feedback and comments. Together with our client we revise the wireframes to the best possible solution to obtain the briefs goals and objectives.

PHASE 3: DESIGN

This is the phase that sets us apart from other web companies. We design from scratch how the web pages will look based on the signed off wireframes. We do not use templates. We conceptualize color, texture and typography etc. If we created the logo and visual identity of the brand we would then naturally follow the brand guidelines. If not, we would then conceptualize the design around the existing visual identity of the company. We would then present the client with a PDF presentation. The design phase is the longest phase as we provide 3 revisions after the first presentation. We use Adobe Photoshop CS5 for design.

PHASE 4: CODING

In this phase we proceed to the actual coding of the website. At this phase the design and look of the website should be finalized. We use Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 to code our websites in HTML and CSS.
